in extremis

Maia Lopin

I grew up mostly in cities, where nature wasn’t always something I could step into freely. Instead, it became something that I learned to seek, notice, and treasure whenever I could. Each summer, I returned to the landscapes of home: the Alps and Brittany, in France. Photography became my way of holding onto them during the year, of preserving the textures, colours, and moods I longed for when I was far away.

To bring an additional layer of meaning to my work, I've chosen to name each photograph using Latin words. The Latin language, with its timeless elegance and rich history, adds a unique dimension to the experience of my photographs. Each word carries the scientific and poetic traditions that have been deeply intertwined with our understanding of the natural world. Latin tells stories in ways that many modern languages cannot. "All language is but a poor translation." - Kafka

At the heart of my work is an interest in environmental sustainability. Photography is not only a way for me to remember landscapes and animals I love, but also a way to inspire care and responsibility for them. What we admire is also something we must protect.

Through my photography, I aim to bridge the gap between our everyday lives and the extraordinary beauty that surrounds us. I hope to inspire you to appreciate the subtleties and the grandeur of the world we live in. It's my hope that my images will foster in you an appreciation for the environment and a sense of stewardship for our beautiful Earth.
